The Making of ‘Movement’

Woo hoo, I’ve finally finished my latest artwork ‘Movement’, started this a couple of weeks ago after using myself as a model (hah, I wish) and just sketching out an idea in my head.  I initially struggled with the dress at first as I didn’t have a reference and unfortunately had to make the darn thing up!  I think it turned out alright in the end (with a few light sketches and lots of erasing!)

I’ve taken a few close up shots with my camera as detail is quite hard to see from the full picture, ideally I wanted the drawing to be A2 but settled with my usual A3 in the end, I reckon if I’d upped’ the paper size I’d be drawing till next Christmas!  As for the materials I used, I’m sure I started out with a 2H for the outlines (I like to work light) worked my way up to B for a little more detail then rounded off with a 3B and 6B for the darker areas.  I also like to use paper stumps to blend with, I’ve worked with them for a few years now and I really like the soft, smoky look they create.

I hope the sense of ‘fluidity’ and (obviously) ‘movement’ comes across in this as I was going for something slightly different with the angle of the head and position of the arms etc…  here are a few up close shots and the finished product at the bottom.
